Do you support people who are struggling?  If so, this session will give you a basic overview of some of the skills used by counsellors that anyone can learn and practice, enabling you to help people with more empathy and success. 


Event Description

The course aims to give those working with young people an opportunity to develop basic counselling skills, exploring different techniques and skills.

It is ideal for participants who are ‘beginners’ as well as those wanting to expand their knowledge, working with young people (usually 11 – 25 year olds) in a range of youth work settings.


Course Content

This session will cover basic counselling skills & techniques, including:

  • Active listening skills
  • Reflecting
  • Non-verbal communication
  • Coping with silence
  • Questioning skills
  • Maintaining boundaries


Meet the Trainer

This course will be delivered by Esther Bromley of Support Staffordshire.

Esther Bromley has been training the voluntary sector for well over a decade.  From humble beginnings delivering a couple of training sessions in a small locality, she now delivers nationwide on most topics that are relevant to any group, organisation or charity. 

As a consultant she works on a bespoke basis with organisations, supporting the development of strategy, trusteeship, governance, income generation and due diligence frameworks. She has been an Investing in Volunteers quality standards advisor for 8 years.  Particular passions include mental health, volunteering, safeguarding, governance and the law as it applies to the charitable world. 

In her spare time she is scout leader and trustee, championing young people and their development and growth.
